Growth and physiological effects of replacing fishmeal with dry-extruded seafood processing waste blended with plant protein feedstuffs in diets for red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus L.)

چکیده

The utilization of seafood processing waste (SPW) is a potential means reducing aquaculture’s reliance on marine forage fish. Therefore, in an effort to recycle valuable nutrients such as high-quality proteins and polyunsaturated fatty acids from potentially wasted processing, novel approach was evaluated enrich plant-derived feedstuffs. Four thermally-processed blends were manufactured by dry-extruding mixture either soybean meal (SBM) or distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) two different ratios SPW (60:40, 40:60 SPW: feedstuffs wet-weight basis). Five diets formulated contain 36 % crude protein 12 lipid, each the four comprising treatments (SBM 60:40, SBM 40:60, DDGS 40:60) which contributed 30 dietary protein, providing 45 FM remaining 25 %. reference diet had its provided solely FM. Groups fish (?98.8 g/fish) distributed into 15 fiberglass tanks (1200 L), fed experimental triplicate apparent satiation twice day for 8 weeks. At end trial, per tank their intestine samples collected flash frozen measure digestive enzymes activities. pooled treatment, re-distributed additional week. A transport-induced stress challenge then performed, transported hauling 2 h. Blood hematocrit, plasma cortisol, lactate osmolality, measured treatment at five sampling points: prior min after transportation, 24, 48 h challenge. Weight gain significantly affected treatments, all but outperforming those diet. Fish also hepatosomatic index. Dietary impacted, relative diet, activity trypsin, alkaline phosphatase, amylase. lower percentage red blood cells observed 60:40 when compared only before Based results this study, inclusion both favorable influence production performance drum while fishmeal oil formulation.

A genetic linkage map of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus.

Second-generation, sex-specific genetic linkage maps were generated for the economically important estuarine-dependent marine fish Sciaenops ocellatus (red drum). The maps were based on F(1) progeny from each of two single-pair mating families. A total of 237 nuclear-encoded microsatellite markers were mapped to 25 linkage groups. The female map contained 226 markers, with a total length of 127...

Growth of newly settled red drum Sciaenops ocellatus in different estuarine habitat types

We examined growth of recently settled juvenile red drum in salt marsh, seagrass, oyster reef, and on nonvegetated bottom areas in the Galveston Bay system of Texas (USA). We estimated growth using otolith microstructure from free-ranging fish collected in different habitat types and also measured growth of red drum in experimental enclosures where fish movement was restricted. Otolith growth w...

Effects of somatolactin on melanosome aggregation in the melanophores of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) scales.

The effects of purified red drum somatolactin on pigment movement in red drum scales were studied in vitro and in vivo. The integument became pale within 2 min following an intramuscular injection of somatolactin (1 nmol/g body weight) in fish held in a black-background aquarium, and gradually regained its black coloration during the subsequent 30 min. No melanosome aggregation was observed in ...

Post-prandial changes in protein synthesis in red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) larvae.

Protein synthesis is one of the major energy-consuming processes in all living organisms. Post-prandial changes in protein synthesis have been studied in a range of animal taxa but have been little studied in fish larvae. Using the flooding-dose method, we measured post-prandial changes in whole-body rates of protein synthesis in regularly fed red drum Sciaenops ocellatus (Linnaeus) larvae for ...

Effects of variable ration levels on direct and indirect measures of growth in juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus)

Relationships between somatic growth (length and weight) and two indirect measures of growth (otolith growth, RNA/DNA ratio) were assessed for red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) under different feeding rations [0%, 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% body weight (BW)/day] for 30 days. Representative samples from each ration level were taken in 10-day intervals between Day 0 and Day 30 for evaluation of dir...
